Last chance to run at don valley stadium?
The Ding Don Chilli Dash is a charity fun run day open to the general public at Don Valley Stadium on Saturday 29th June 2013.
The day consists of a choice between the Ding Mile and a 5km fun run around Don Valley Stadium and its grounds.
The event is inspired by the story of Jo Orpwood, a Silverdale School pupil who has been fighting three brain tumours since he was 8 years old. Jo's life recovery was significantly aided by Neurocare, a local charity that has been raising money to buy life-saving equipment for the neurosciences department of the Royal Hallamshire hospital for over 25 years.
Jo himself can't wait: "Running is such a great way to stay healthy and it’s a lot of fun too. The chance to raise money for the people at Neurocare as well just means it's guaranteed to be an amazing day."
Our event sponsor is equally remarkable. Ding Chilli Sauce is local initiative cooked up by 15 year old Chris Parker, a contemporary of Jo's, who last year devised and bottled the fabulously fiery fundraising elixir in the kitchens Silverdale School to help Jo raise money for Neurocare.
The Dash also marks one of the last opportunities for the general public to use the international athletics facilities at Don Valley Stadium and the event has received huge support from athletes based at the venue including, team GB middle distance runner and European Indoor medallist, Mukhtar Mohammed and former bobsleigh World Champion Nicola Minichiello.
Mukhtar said, “This is a great event and everyone should get behind it and enjoy the Stadium while they still can, I wouldn’t be here today without the Don Valley”.
Nicola said, “The Ding Don Chilli Dash is a great cause and I'm definitely going to be there. I think it's important that the people of Sheffield get a final chance to show their appreciation to Don Valley Stadium where so many talented athletes have prospered.”
The Ding Don Chilli Dash is led by Rob Creasey, Jo's athletics coach who works with young people across South Yorkshire through education and sport: “We want to invite the city to come down to our Stadium, celebrate the achievements of Jo and Chris and take part in the dash.”
Emma Douglas, Neurocare Head of Fundraising and PR said: “The Silverdale School pupils and staff have been supporting Neurocare for a couple of years now and this is their biggest event yet. We are so excited to be part of the last public race in the iconic Don Valley Stadium and so grateful that the organising team have chosen to support us."
